Getting hair extensions is one thing; taking care of hair extensions is another. While the quality of the hair extension plays a small role in its upkeep, most of them have to be washed and pampered just like real hair.

  • Avoid washing new extensions for two days. The hair needs that time to bond with the real hair and dry completely. After two days, gently brush or comb through the hair to remove any knots or mats. Gradually wet the hair, then wash it with a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo. Start at the ends and work inward.
  • Massage the hair gently. Condition only the ends, and leave the conditioner on for at least two minutes. Do not rub the hair together, and do not pull it or pile it on top of your head.
  • Rinse the hair  extension thoroughly, then squeeze out the water gently and pat dry your whole head. Do not rub or pull the hair, or turn your head upside down and wrap the extensions in a towel.
  • Use a soft bristle brush to comb the hair. Start at the ends and go up. Brush the hair using gentle strokes. Rough or fast strokes could pull the extensions out of shape.
  • Style the hair like normal, but avoid using products that volumize the hair unless you use it only on your crown where there are no extensions. Volumizing products cause the cuticle to lift on the extensions. Do not use heat near the bonds, which will cause the bonds to melt and slip out of the hair. Use a leave-in conditioner to keep the hair soft, but ask your stylist how much to use. Some conditioners may cause some extensions to dry out. An exception is a cuticle correct hair extension, which can be treated just like your real hair.
  • Only wash extensions every three days. If you have oily hair, pin the extensions in a bun and wash your crown alone. Always braid the extensions or put them in a bun before bed, and always dry the hair first. Wet extensions will cause the hair to mat.
